🧱 The First Principles of Osteoporosis
- Osteoporosis is characterised by reduced bone mineral density, resulting from an imbalance in bone remodeling where osteoclast activity (bone resorption) exceeds osteoblast activity (bone formation).
- Aging reduces bone cell activity, androgen deficiencies (particularly estrogen) accelerate bone loss, and inadequate calcium or vitamin D intake weakens bones further.
- Osteoporosis can be diagnosed with investigations (DEXA T-Score <2.5) or clinically (minimal trauma fracture).
- Minimal trauma fractures are often found in long bones (hip, wrist) and the spine (vertebral body).
