🧱 The First Principles of Osteoporosis

  1. Osteoporosis is characterised by reduced bone mineral density, resulting from an imbalance in bone remodeling where osteoclast activity (bone resorption) exceeds osteoblast activity (bone formation).
  2. Aging reduces bone cell activity, androgen deficiencies (particularly estrogen) accelerate bone loss, and inadequate calcium or vitamin D intake weakens bones further.
  3. Osteoporosis can be diagnosed with investigations (DEXA T-Score <2.5) or clinically (minimal trauma fracture).
  4. Minimal trauma fractures are often found in long bones (hip, wrist) and the spine (vertebral body).
